During class, you can expect to learn how to play Capoeira, sing Capoeira songs, play traditional instruments, and much more. Beginners are introduced to new techniques, songs and instruments at their own pace. The more often you can train, the better! Each class is different so the more you can attend, the more well-rounded training you’ll receive and the faster you will progress.
Madison Capoeira group also teaches sister arts of capoeira, such as samba de roda, maculelê, frevo, etc… to both honor the history and culture of Capoeira and further develop our abilities to move to different rhythms and flow together. Capoeira is so multifaceted; everyone has strengths to contribute and things that will challenge them to grow in new ways.

Uniforms are required for students that are formally part of the Madison Capoeira group. Group shirts and white abadás (pants) are available for purchase through the instructors. The first (raw) cord is given with the full uniform, and future cords are earned as students gain more skills.
Formal induction into the group happens at a "batizado" ceremony, which is usually followed by a "troca de cordas" ceremony for students that have earned new cord promotions. These ceremonies typically occur annually.
Along with regular classes, capoeiristas are encouraged to participate in open rodas, perform with the group, attend special workshops, and take trips together to attend big events that other groups are hosting. All of these events help us grow as capoeiristas and connect with the larger capoeira community.
